The Magic and Reality of Working for a Charity at Christmas

Updates • Dec 2025

Hello, I'm Isla, the Graduate Marketing and Fundraising Officer here at Toybox. Welcome to my blog - This time I'm letting you peak behind the curtains at what it's like to work for a charity in the lead up to Christmas!

Christmas in the Charity Sector

Every family has their own Christmas traditions, whether it’s how you decorate the Christmas tree, what films are a ‘must watch’, or whether you still put tangerines in your Christmas stockings. For charities, getting ready for Christmas seems to mean things just keep getting busier as the festive season draws closer.

Christmas is the busiest time of year for charities, but what does that really mean behind the scenes? This blog I’m revealing the festive cheer, the challenges, and why this season matters for giving back.

Mince Pies, Music, and the Magic of Giving

It’s no surprise that the run up to Christmas is the busiest time of year for UK charities, and it takes a lot of planning to make sure everything goes smoothly. Many charities see a surge in donations during the festive season – for some charities Christmas giving can account for a quarter to a third of their annual donations. That’s why Christmas appeals are such a crucial part of the charity calendar, and planning starts months in advance. In fact, for many in the sector, Christmas begins in August when appeal ideas start taking shape. But it’s not until those appeals go live that the festive season truly feels underway!

We’re definitely a festive bunch at Toybox. Conversations have already started about Christmas cards, mince pies, and even strong opinions on tinsel while we’re making our morning coffees. The most hotly debated topic so far seems to be when it’s acceptable to start playing Christmas tunes! But our excitement isn’t just about the fun stuff. There’s a real buzz when letters and donations start coming in from the Christmas appeal.

There’s something truly special about working for a charity in the lead-up to Christmas. Watching donations grow and communities unite with a shared sense of purpose brings a real sense of magic. Christmas in the charity sector is a season where generosity shines, and that gives me so much hope because Christmas isn’t just about Mariah Carey, it’s also about how the festive spirit can make a real difference.

The Hidden Struggles of the Festive Season

Christmas is often painted as a time of joy, family, and abundance, but working for Toybox has reminded me that for many, this season can be one of struggle. Homelessness, food insecurity, and poor health don’t pause for the holidays.

We recently watched a documentary from one of our partner organisations. It was filmed by four street children, who were given smart phones and encouraged to film their lives. It was eye-opening to see what their days consisted of, but it was also heartbreaking to see what these children were going through. At Toybox we face the reality of children who haven’t eaten properly in weeks or months, and cases of children sleeping outside at night or working until late on the streets just to survive. These realities serve as a reminder about the privileges I have. I have never felt so grateful for my family, my home, my friends, and having food readily available. I’m sure many in the charity sector share this perspective.

Working for Toybox during the festive season means coming face-to-face with the contrast between celebration and hardship. On the one hand, seeing the magic that Christmas can bring, on the other, we witness the struggles of vulnerable children at this time of year. It’s a powerful reminder of why our work matters.

Yet, in the midst of these challenges, there’s hope. Every donation, every act of kindness reminds us that change is possible. This is the magic of the season: lives being transformed because strangers chose to care. It’s a reminder that while we can’t solve everything overnight, we can make a real difference one child at a time.

Making a Difference This Christmas

Working for Toybox in the run up to Christmas is changing my perspective on the holiday. I feel inspired by the resilience of those we support and by the generosity of those who give. As we head into Christmas, I’m reminded that while the season can highlight hardship, it also reveals incredible compassion. This Christmas, my biggest wish is that we all take a moment to reflect. Maybe that means donating to a charity, volunteering your time, or simply pausing to appreciate the people and comforts around you. Every gift, every act of kindness, and every moment of care brings hope to children who need it most. That’s what makes Christmas truly special, not just the lights and celebrations but the way people unite to make a difference.
