A warm drink and a tasty meal can build trust with a child who needs us. A child living alone on the streets can go for days without eating. The children we work with are often visibly malnourished and suffer terrible hunger pains. Today, you can buy a street child a warm, nutritious meal and a drink. Your gift will help build their strength and keep them healthy. Distributing food also helps earn the trust of children and increases their interest in other helpful services we can offer them.

A birth certificate can help protect a child for the rest of their life. When a child does not officially exist, they have no legal rights and are exposed to some of the worst forms of abuse. This is made worse by the fact that they have no access to medicine, and many are refused access to doctors or hospitals. So, prevention is key. When we give these basic items, children also see that there are people who genuinely care about their health and well-being.

This is humiliating, leads to people viewing them as dirty and causes discrimination. A smart school uniform can offer a street child a chance for a better future. In many of the countries Toybox works in, children cannot attend school without a proper school uniform. When a family's income is stretched, sending a child to school can have a negative impact on household income if that child is then not working. The associated costs such as uniforms can also often be out of many family's reach. Your gift today will help us work with families to help them understand the importance of education and their children attending school. Providing a school uniform to a street child could be the difference between them starting school, or missing out on education altogether.

Abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation are just some of the challenges faced by street children around the world. During workshops, children also have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, grow their self-esteem and plan for their futures. Street children don’t often have many places to relax and have fun – the streets are full of dangers that force them to assume the roles and responsibilities of adults much too soon. A first aid kit can help us talk to street children about their other problems. Life on the streets is dangerous for children. Injury is common as a result of physical abuse and unsafe work. Yet street children are often denied access to the medical care they urgently need, especially if they are not registered. A first aid kit can help our frontline workers tend to children’s injuries immediately. The kit comes in an easy-to-carry bag and contains first aid essentials, such as bandages, dressings, plasters, wipes and ointments. Giving first aid and treating injuries also allows frontline workers to give children counselling to cope with the mental anguish of life on the streets.

Children who work rag-picking during the day sometimes use their collection sacks to shield from cold winter nights or huddle up with friends to help keep the cold away. Vocational training aims to give young people the opportunity to develop skills which they can then take forward to use in their lives which might help them to earn a living, support their future family or build a business. For many young people, this can be a real turning point in their lives and their journey away from the streets.
