Thousands of children and families in Kathmandu, Nepal, are facing an unfolding humanitarian crisis following the large-scale demolition of informal settlements across the city. Families have been displaced with little notice, leaving many children without safe shelter, access to education or the support networks they rely on.
In April, authorities began clearing informal riverside settlements in Kathmandu Valley. Areas including Thapathali, Shantinagar, Jadibuti, Manohara, Sinamangal and Balkhu have all been affected. According to reports from our local partner, more than 3,500 households have been impacted and over 5,000 people displaced. Many families lost not only their homes, but also personal belongings, identity documents and sources of income.
As families search for safety, children are bearing the heaviest burden. Many have been forced to sleep outdoors, under bridges or in temporary shelters. With the monsoon season bringing heavy rain and colder nights, children face increased risks to their health and wellbeing. Disruption to education, family separation, psychological trauma and a greater risk of exploitation and trafficking are all growing concerns.

Our local partner, SathSath, has been responding throughout the crisis. Despite the destruction of a Toybox-supported Learning Centre and the disruption of Mobile School activities, teams have continued to reach displaced children and families. They have traced children reported missing, provided emergency supplies, offered counselling, and helped children enrol in education wherever possible.
As recovery efforts continue, families remain uncertain about the future. Many are still waiting for permanent housing solutions. We ask you to stand with these children and join us in prayer. Please pray for:
- Children and families who have lost their homes, that they may find safety, stability and hope during this incredibly difficult time.
- Children living in temporary shelters or outdoors, that they will be protected from illness, exploitation and harm.
- Access to education, particularly for children whose schools and learning spaces have been destroyed.
- Healing from trauma, for children, parents and caregivers whose lives have been turned upside down.
- Our partner SathSath and frontline staff, as they continue supporting vulnerable children in these incredible challenging circumstances.
- Decision-makers and authorities, that lasting, compassionate solutions will be found for displaced families and that children's rights and dignity will be upheld.
