Earlier this year, thousands of families across Kathmandu were devastated when settlements were demolished, leaving children without safe homes, disrupting their education, and placing many at greater risk of poverty and exploitation.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Toybox supporters in response to our recent appeal, local partner SathSath has been able to provide urgent support to children and families affected by this crisis, helping them regain stability and hope during an incredibly difficult time.

helping children stay in education
For many children, one of the biggest concerns was whether they would be able to continue their education.
After the demolitions, many families were forced to relocate, leaving children uncertain about whether they would be able to stay in school. One child shared;
"After the demolition, my family and I had to relocate to another area. I was uncertain about where I would continue my education and which school I could attend. The Mobile School Team supported me in securing admission to a new school, which enabled me to continue my studies and pursue my education without interruption."
Another project participant faced similar challenges after moving far from their school. They reflected;
"When our settlement was demolished, I lost my home and had to move far away. I was worried because travelling one and a half hours to my old school was almost impossible. With SathSath's support, I was able to re-enrol in a school near my new home. I am very thankful to SathSath for helping me continue my education."
Education support also included helping children access essential school items. Another project participant whose family was affected by the demolitions, lost all of her school shoes during heavy rainfall that followed. She shared;
"During the demolition period, there was heavy rainfall, and the water swept away all my school shoes. I cried a lot because I was worried about what I would wear to school. When SathSath provided me with a new pair of school shoes, I felt very happy and relieved. I am very thankful to SathSath for supporting me during such a difficult time."
With support from Toybox supporters, SathSath has helped children access education, school materials and practical assistance, ensuring that a crisis does not bring an end to their learning.

supporting emotional wellbeing
Losing a home and community can have a profound emotional impact on children and families. Alongside practical support, SathSath has been providing counselling and psychosocial support to help children process their experiences. One of them shared;
"Because of what I have experienced, I developed many fears. But now, after receiving counselling and pouring my heart out to SathSath's counsellor, two things truly make me happy. First, whenever my mother is happy, I automatically feel happy too. Second, whenever I get a chance to express my thoughts and share what is in my heart with the counsellor at the Resource Centre, I feel relieved and happy."

helping families access vital support
For many families, the challenges extended beyond finding a new place to live. Important documents were lost during the demolitions, making it difficult to access government support. One grandmother explained;
"My house was demolished as it was in the squatter area. We lost more than a place to live, including my grandson's birth certificate, which left me in distress. I was worried when legal documents were required for the government grant. Thankfully, because of SathSath's support, we were able to obtain a copy of the document and access the government assistance available to us."
A trusted presence in the community
The impact of SathSath's work continues to be recognised throughout the community. A member of the Community Police Team shared;
"SathSath's work has always been appreciated by the community police. Over the years, we have known many beneficiaries who have received support from the organisation for legal, educational and emergency needs. It has been easier for us to refer cases, contact and coordinate with the organisation, and we will continue to do so."
