Raising young voices: Marking the World Day Against Child Labour in India

Updates • India • Jun 2025

Earlier this month, to mark the World Day Against Child Labour, Toybox local partner in India, CHETNA brought together children, educators, police officials, and community members in a series of powerful and creative activities.

A key highlight of the day was a child-centred assembly, where young people from the community gathered with local police officials. Children listened as the police explained important laws related to child labour as well as discussing ways to prevent it. In a particularly impactful moment, some of the children engaged a police representative in discussion, helping them better understand the realities of child labour from a young person’s perspective.

Educational sessions led by CHETNA educators and police officials helped children explore the legal and social dimensions of child labour. These interactive workshops encouraged children to reflect on what constitutes child labour and to consider their rights.

During the day, children also expressed their views through a wide range of creative performances. Puppet shows portrayed children as marionettes bound by the chains of labour, while powerful street plays depicted the harsh realities many young people face. Through posters, poems, and placards, children shared strong messages advocating for the right to education and a childhood free from exploitation.

The children’s voices rang through the streets as they held rallies, chanting slogans and carrying banners to raise awareness across their community. In a symbolic act of advocacy, children also wrote postcards to the Labour Department, describing the problems they face and highlighting the the efforts they are making to bring about change. Throughout the day, the participation of children took centre stage. With creativity and a clear message, they called for a future where every child is free to learn, play, and grow.
