How counselling is changing lives in India

Updates • May 2025

Project staff Doli and Babita are Educators for local partner CHETNA, in India. Here they discuss the role that counselling plays in supporting children's emotional health and wellbeing at Toybox supported projects in Delhi and Jaipur.

Doli

“My work is not just limited to teaching children; it extends to ensuring their overall well-being, holistic development, and integration into mainstream society. A significant part of my day is spent teaching children, assisting them with their remedial classes, and communicating with their parents. I also conduct home visits to understand the living conditions of the children, identify the challenges they face, and work towards finding solutions.

Counselling and guidance is central to my role. Many children experience difficult circumstances, and require emotional support. Their lives are filled with struggles and hardships, which often lead to a lack of confidence, fear, and a sense of insecurity. Counselling boosts self-confidence, helps children understand their emotions and brings about positive life changes. It empowers them to fight for their rights and ask questions.

Often, it prevents future mistakes. Counselling can be incredibly beneficial for any child or parent who needs guiding through a difficult situation. Every child has a hidden talent, they just need someone to recognise it, provide guidance, and show love. By listening to them, understanding their emotions, providing support, and creating a positive, safe, environment, they too can achieve their dreams.”

"One of my top priorities is ensuring that no child feels discriminated against because of their educational level or the clothes they wear. I take special care to create an environment where every child feels valued and respected. I also keep in mind the challenges they face at home, such as financial struggles or a lack of access to basic necessities like electricity and water. When children or their families share these difficulties with me, I listen with an open heart and do my best to support them. Sometimes, this involves counseling both children and their families, offering guidance and solutions to keep them engaged in education.

The children we work with are often left alone at home while their parents go out to earn a living. This lack of supervision leaves them without proper guidance and exposes them to negative influences in their surroundings. They frequently witness activities like theft, gambling, alcohol consumption, and substance abuse. Additionally, they see other children skipping school, using foul language, and engaging in excessive mobile phone usage. These situations increase their vulnerability to abuse and exploitation, putting their safety and well-being at risk. In such challenging circumstances, counselling and proper guidance become essential to help these children overcome these influences, make informed choices, and stay on the right path.

I really hope that the children I’ve worked with and helped enrol in school will continue their education with the same enthusiasm and dedication. I aspire for them to achieve great success in their future endeavours and grow into individuals who are fully aware of their rights. With this awareness, I hope they not only stand up for their own rights but also work to protect the rights of other children. As a committed worker, I will continue to provide them with counselling and support whenever needed, ensuring they remain on the path of education and empowerment. Their progress and well-being will always be my priority."
