In May 2024, Kenya endured over six weeks of torrential rain. Soon, rivers and sewers overflowed. By the time it stopped, many regions were underwater.
Donate nowThousands of children and families in Nairobi call the streets their home. They lost everything. Shelters. Possessions. Livelihoods. Many lost their lives.
Those who survived are frightened and confused. Despite being most affected, when it comes to aid, too many street children are being forgotten.
Few possess formal identification. For those who did, many have seen it lost to the floods. Without it, they cannot seek aid through official channels.
Instead, aid has been prioritised for the easiest-to-reach families, those with a permanent address and ID documents. Those already recognised by society.
Used to discrimination, and vulnerable to exploitation, street children are wary of the authorities and adults they don't know. They avoid seeking help from strangers.
There's no where safe to sleep, little food and water, and few opportunities to make a living. Out of desperation, children entered the water to retrieve scrap metal to sell. Many drowned.
At risk of malnutrition, exposed to diseases like cholera and typhoid, and struggling to cope with the trauma of their loss, these children are in desperate need of our help.
“I am very worried about the safety of street children and their families due to the immediate dangers posed by the floods. I am further grieved by the destruction of property and loss of life. I am anxious for street children's futures - including where they will find shelter and food, and how will they access aid.”
