The road
to recovery

Will you help us be there for street children this Easter

In the last 12 months, the number of children left destitute on the streets of Guatemala City has increased...

Give urgently needed items

These children, who should be safe at home, are now trying to fend for themselves in one of the most hostile environments on earth.

Every day, these children are at risk of violence, abuse and other hideous forms of exploitation.

Their situation became even harder during the pandemic restrictions. Being on the streets was criminalised despite the children having nowhere else go. These children, many of whom have no legal rights, have suffered police brutality on top of their worsening and life-threatening poverty.

Our outreach teams can help make this happen, but they are running short on the supplies they need to do their job properly.

These five crucial items can help us get street children on the road to recovery.

x2 blankets

A blanket

£14

It gets bitterly cold on the city streets where we work – especially at night. For children who are homeless, this cold can be a killer. But when you buy a child a blanket to help them wrap up warm at night, you can help protect them from the elements. A blanket doesn’t seem like a lot to give but, for a child who will go to sleep shivering, it means an awful lot.

Handing out blankets also allows outreach workers to make first contact with children who need our help but might not feel brave enough to approach us.

A food package

£16

A child living on the streets can go for days without eating. The children we work with are often visibly malnourished and suffer terrible hunger pains. This Easter, you can buy a street child a food package that contains non-perishable items such as rice, beans, sugar, oil, noodles and hot chocolate to give them the nourishment their growing bodies need.

Distributing food also helps earn the trust of children and increases their interest in the other helpful services we can offer them.

A hygiene kit

£11

Living on dirty streets without basic sanitation leaves children exposed many illnesses, of which coronavirus is just one. This is made worse by the fact that they have no access to medicine and many are refused access to doctors or hospitals. So prevention is key. When you buy a child a hygiene kit, which includes soap, toothpaste and shampoo, you can help them stay clean, healthy and protected from disease.

When we give these basic items, children also see that there are people who genuinely care about their health and well-being.

First aid kit

£41

A first aid kit

£41

Life on the streets is dangerous for children. Injury is common as a result of physical abuse and unsafe work. Yet street children are often denied access to the medical care they urgently need, especially if they are not registered. A portable first aid kit can help our outreach workers tend to children’s injuries immediately. The kit contains first aid essentials, such bandages, dressings, plasters, wipes and ointments.

Giving first aid and treating injuries also allows outreach workers to give children counselling to cope with the mental anguish of life on the streets.

Clean clothes

£9

Can start a child's journey away from the streets

Clean clothes

£9

Street children usually only have one set of clothes to wear every day. This is humiliating, leads to people viewing them as dirty and causes discrimination. A set of clean clothes – including socks, jumper, coat and a woollen hat - can keep a child warm and improve their self-esteem.

What’s more, when a child comes for a set of clean clothes, they can tell us what they need from us to help them leave the streets for good.
