The Coronavirus pandemic is having a huge impact on the street children we work with across the world. We want to say a huge thank you to supporters like you, because of your kindness our partners around the globe are urgently working to support the most vulnerable children in need today.

We know that for those children already living on dangerous streets, keeping safe from the pandemic is going to be near on impossible. There is little access to clean and safe sanitation or housing, underlying health conditions mean more serious complications and on top of this they will continue to face the discrimination and abuse from those that should be protecting them. So now, more than ever we need your help to reach these children and that is why we have asked you to gift a gift this Easter.

Not just a gift catalogue

Give a street child more than they ever thought possible this Easter

In buying one or more of these gifts, you will do more than give children living on the world’s most dangerous city streets the basics they need to survive. You will also help our outreach partners find children who might otherwise be unreachable.

These gifts have been hand-picked so that Toybox-funded outreach workers can also get to know these children and help them escape the streets for good.

When you buy a street child a gift from this catalogue, you can help the child twice

Two blankets

Not just a blanket

£14

It gets bitterly cold on the city streets where we work – especially at night. For children who are homeless, this cold can be a killer. But when you buy a child a blanket to help them wrap up warm at night, you can help protect them from the elements. A blanket doesn’t seem like a lot to give but, for a child who will go to sleep shivering, it means an awful lot.

Handing out blankets also allows outreach workers to make first contact with children who need our help but might not feel brave enough to approach us.

Not just a food package

£16

A child living alone on the streets can go for days without eating. The children we work with are often visibly malnourished and suffer terrible hunger pains. This Easter, you can buy a street child a food package that contains non-perishable items such as rice, beans, noodles and hot chocolate. Your gift can build their strength and keep them healthy.

Distributing food also helps earn the trust of children and increases their interest in the other helpful services we can offer them.

Not just a hygiene kit

£11

Living on filthy streets without basic sanitation leaves children exposed to a host of dangerous diseases. This is made worse by the fact that they have no access to medicine and many are refused access to doctors or hospitals. So prevention is key. When you buy a child a hygiene kit – which includes soap, toothpaste and shampoo – you can help them stay clean, healthy and protected from preventable diseases.

When we give these basic items, children also see that there are people who genuinely care about their health and well-being.

A first aid kit

Not just a first aid kit

£41

Life on the streets is dangerous for children. Injury is common as a result of physical abuse and unsafe work. Yet street children are often denied access to the medical care they urgently need, especially if they are not registered. A first aid kit can help our outreach workers tend to children’s injuries immediately. The kit comes in an easy-to-carry bag and contains first aid essentials, such as bandages, dressings, plasters, wipes and ointments.

Giving first aid and treating injuries also allows outreach workers to give children counselling to cope with the mental anguish of life on the streets.

A clothing package

Not just clean clothes

£9

Street children have no money to buy or wash clothes. Instead, they have to keep wearing whatever filthy rags they can find in city rubbish dumps. This leads to children being discriminated against because they’re seen as dirty, which they find humiliating. This Easter, you can help by giving a child a set of clean clothes – including socks, a jumper, a coat and a woollen hat – to help them keep warm and improve their self-esteem.

What’s more, when a child comes for a set of clean clothes, they can tell us what they need from us to help them leave the streets for good.

A mattress

Not just a mattress

£24

Bedtime is not a happy time for street children. ‘Bed’ is often little more than a piece of cardboard on a cold, damp pavement. You can help a street child this Easter by buying them a portable mattress. This treasured possession can be carried by a child as they move from location to location to stay safe. Your gift will make a child a little more comfortable wherever they sleep at night.

But a mattress is a short-term solution. The connection we make with through gifts like this will help find street children a safe place to live permanently.
